Lester Earnshaw was born in Hawke's Bay. From 1941 until 1946, he served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force in Great Britain, North Africa, and Italy. After the war he worked for the New Zealand Hydro Electric Department building power lines. Later, he became, in turn, an electrician, a carpenter, a chicken farmer, and finally, an electronics engineer and manufacturer. In January of 1961, he and his family migrated to the United States, where he continued a career in electronics. Currently he lives in Sedona, Arizona.

Art runs in the family. Lester's daughter Adele is an artist in watercolor and oils and a member of the US Society of Animal Artists. Still a New Zealander, she was chosen to design the first three stamps for New Zealand's Bird Habitat Stamp Programme, which was based on the US Federal Duck Stamp program. She hangs in galleries across the United States and in Paris. Examples of her work may be seen at adeleearnshaw.com

Lester's first child Joanne was 13 when the family moved to the United States. She is now in Colorado real estate (mountain-living.com), and son Cameron, six when he left New Zealand, runs the family electronic business. (swiftwireless.com.)
